It isn't easy starting your own business and making it succeed. A lot of people try and fail.
Not so Alison Small, a talented Cromwell jewelry maker who not only has just the right stuff, she makes the right stuff too.
Through her home-based business, Ali's Jewelry & Gifts, Alison offers necklaces, rings, bracelets, chokers and earrings, each carefully crafted by her own hands and therefore unique. Seeing her art, made primary from silver and semi-precious stones, you immediately sense their connection to the earth from which they came, a connection they invite you to enjoy. The styles are both simple and timeless, reflecting the properties of their natural stones. Turquoise, hematite, rose quartz, and silver. Pearl beads are held together by linen string. Not your typical, store-bought product made by the thousands that you see in conventional stores.
One of her fascinating styles is the memory-wire necklace, a piece of jewelry that seems to remember how you want to wear it. As a necklace, it opens up to hold its shape around your neck without a clasp. Slip it on your wrist as a bracelet, it comfortably wraps around this new diameter, regaining its earlier shape when so desired.
Lacking a storefront, Alison started selling her creations by word of mouth, and then by appearing at craft fairs, parties and various outlets. Before long, she built her own web site and things really started to roll.
The significant success that she cited was attending Cromwell's Riverport Festival 2003. Although scheduled to appear at another event that day, she canceled it to test the waters in her own home town. Alison set up a booth on Main Street and was astounded by all the customers interested in her wares. She looks forward to attending next year's festival.
Alison provides jewelry parties at people's homes, where the host of the party receives a 20% credit toward any jewelry she or he wants to purchase. Something to consider with the holidays close by.
Her motto is We're not happy unless you are happy. To this effect, all her creations are 100% guaranteed.
Alison also teaches an E-Commerce course at Bay Path College in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Her expertise in programming resulted in the building of her own web site where you can order merchandise online.
